COULD A COUNTY-WIDE AMALGAMATION BE ON THE HORIZON?

Lower Tier Councils are expressing fears a suggestion from the Huron County Economic Development Board to conduct a $60 000 study on effective governance may be a hidden push to move on to the next level with amalgamations that began in year 2000, and create one county-wide municipality.

Mayor Kevin Morrison, 1 of 2 Goderich representatives at County believes a study may well be good, if that's all it is.

Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh Reeve Ben Van Diepenbeek, also a County representative says amalgamation may well be behind the initiative, but local government mergers have never been popular.

The matter returns for discussion at Huron County Council's meeting Wednesday (June 21st).
