January is Alzheimer's Awareness month.

Executive Director of the Alzheimer's Society of Huron County, Cathy Ritsema, says this years theme is 'I Live With Dementia, Let Me Help You Understand'.

She says there are lots of stigmas associated with Alzheimer's and dementia which is why the month is all about awareness.

Ritsema says that a recent survey concluded that many people living with dementia felt that they could not tell family members as they would be ignored.

The survey also concluded that many people also felt embarrassed about telling people they had dementia because of how people would treat them.

It is estimated that 1200 people in Huron County are living with dementia.
