A Michigan-based company is helping to raise money for the Lake Huron Centre for Coastal Conservation. A glass straw manufacturer called "Strawesome" has designed a reusable straw to combat plastic pollution in local waterways. The program is called "Straws For A Cause." Reusable straws, featuring Lake Huron's endangered piping plover, can be purchased at the Goderich office of the Lake Huron Centre for Coastal Conservation. A recent clean-up of the Goderich shoreline removed nearly 1100 pounds of garbage, including 1600 microplastics. Last year, plastic straws were one of the top 10 items found during beach clean-ups, with about 17,600 straws picked up by volunteers on Canadian shorelines.
