HURON COUNTY BANNING SMOKING ON COUNTY PROPERTIES
8/9/2018 8:01:32 AM

Beginning September 1, a new by-law prohibiting smoking on County-owned properties will come into effect. Roughly 20 County owned properties will be impacted by the by-law including the museum, social services, the Huron County Health Unit, and areas around the Goderich Courthouse. Senior Public Health Promoter with the Huron County Health Unit, Angela Willert says the by-law is in effect to help people.

Willert says that similar by-laws have been implemented across the province and there has been a success. Signage will be posted at each County-owned property and includes not just tobacco, but also marijuana, smoking equipment, and vaping. Willert says that the by-law is currently legally enforceable however to allow public education and signage by-law won't take effect until September 1, but she adds the main focus is education and it's anticipated that fines won't be laid until January 1. Anyone who breaks the by-law will face a fine of $105 dollars. For more information, visit huroncounty.ca/by-laws.
